  2. AMATEUR RADIO EXAMINATION OPPORTUNITIES

  5. Periodic test session information is provided by the 
  6. ARRL/VEC for the upcoming six to eight week period under
  7. the filename EXAMS.TXT.  For further information about any
  8. of these examinations, please contact the test session CONTACT 
  9. PERSON at the telephone number provided.  If necessary, you 
  10. may contact the ARRL/VEC at 203-666-1541 x282 for additional 
  11. information.  Electronic mail may be forwarded to the ARRL/VEC

  15. Although the test session information listings do not 
  16. indicate whether walk-ins are accepted or not, most test 
  17. sessions do allow walk-ins.  We encourage you, however, to 
  18. always contact the CONTACT PERSON at the telephone number 
  19. provided so that the VE Team is aware that you be attending 
  20. the test session.

  23. STILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAM?

  25. If you would like information on how to become licensed; or 
  26. how to locate Amateur Radio clubs, instructors, licensing 
  27. classes and/or Novice examiners in your area; please contact 
  28. the ARRL Educational Activities Department (EAD) at 203-666-
  29. 1541 x219.  The EAD can also provide information on

  35. AFTER THE EXAM - HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE MY LICENSE ARRIVES?
  36.  
  37. If you've recently passed your initial examination for an 
  38. Amateur Radio license, or if you've just upgraded, please 
  39. accept our warmest congratulations!  Now that you've 
  40. passed the test, receiving your license in the mail is the 
  41. next step. 
  42.      Since the FCCs current license processing time is at 
  43. about seven weeks, and since there can be additional time 
  44. required within the volunteer examiner system of two weeks 
  45. or so allowing your VE Team and VEC (if for Technician class 
  46. or higher) time to process your application, your license 
  47. might not arrive for up to eight to ten weeks.    
  48.      To keep your wait for that new license or upgrade as 
  49. short as possible, we are taking the following steps to give 
  50. you the fastest possible service. 
  51.      We have begun providing our VE Teams with express OVERNIGHT 
  52. mailers for the return of applications from ARRL/VEC exam 
  53. sessions to us at the VEC--and we at the VEC have begun 
  54. sending our daily packages to the FCCs Licensing Facility 
  55. via an express OVERNIGHT service.
  56.      We are also encouraging our VEs, and imposing 
  57. the same emphasis upon ourselves, to process examination 
  58. packages as quickly as possible to expedite your license. 
  59.      Having implemented the above procedures, the ARRL/VEC 
  60. wants your wait for your new license to be as short as 
  61. possible.

  66. THINGS TO BRING TO THE EXAMINATION 
  67.  
  68. Be prepared to bring the following items with you to VEC 
  69. examinations:  Your original current FCC-issued Amateur 
  70. Radio license (and a copy of it)--if you are licensed; Any 
  71. original Written or Code Element credit documents (CSCEs) 
  72. which are currently valid; Two forms of identification 
  73. (e.g., a photo-ID or drivers license and another item 
  74. indicating your current name and address); A calculator (if 
  75. necessary); A pen and two pencils; and, the applicable 
  76. examination test fee ($5.40 for 1992 ARRL/VEC Test 
  77. Sessions).

  80. TECHNICIAN CLASS GRANDFATHER CREDIT 
  81.  
  82. If you hold a Technician class license which was issued 
  83. prior to 3/21/87, you are not required to take the Element 
  84. 3B (General class written) examination if you can provide a 
  85. copy of your FCC-license dated before that date.  If your 
  86. licensed has since been renewed, and if you don't have a 
  87. copy of the pre-3/21/87 license, you must seek a 
  88. verification letter from the FCC.  To do so, write to FCC, 
  89. 1270 Fairfield Rd, Gettysburg PA 17325-7245 and request a 
  90. Form 1010-B Verification Letter verifying that you were 
  91. licensed as a Technician class prior to 3/21/87.  After you 
  92. receive that form from the FCC, bring it to the test session 
  93. with you in order to claim your deserved credit.

  96. LOST LICENSES
  97.  
  98. If you have lost your license, be aware that VECs are not 
  99. permitted to submit any upgrades to the FCC without a copy of your 
  100. current license attached to the 610 form.  In order to 
  101. expedite your upgrade, you must write the FCC and request a 
  102. replacement license.  Since that can take several weeks to 
  103. arrive, we recommend that you also request a Form 1010-B 
  104. verification letter from the FCC which will arrive in a 
  105. couple of weeks--and is legally binding license document.  
  106. You may use that form as a license until your Form-660 
  107. license arrives.  The original and a copy of Form 1010-B 
  108. must be brought to the test session verifying that you are 
  109. currently licensed--the copy of which will be attached to 
  110. your upgrade application (in lieu of an actual Form-660 
  111. license copy).  To request the Form 1010-B Verification 
  112. Letter, write to: FCC, 1270 Fairfield Rd, Gettysburg PA 
  113. 17325-7245; indicating that you lost your license and that 
  114. you are requesting that a replacement license be issued to 
  115. you--also be sure to request that they send you a Form 1010-
  116. B Verification Letter verifying that you are licensed.

  119. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR THE HANDICAPPED OR DISABLED
  120.  
  121. The FCC requires that the administering VEs must accommodate 
  122. an examinee whose physical disabilities require a special 
  123. examination procedure.  To do so, the administering VEs may 
  124. require a physician's statement indicating the nature of the 
  125. disability before determining which, if any, special 
  126. accommodative procedures must be used. 
  127.  
  128. The VEs may accommodate handicapped/disabled examinees by 
  129. administering the examination at a place convenient and 
  130. comfortable for the examinee--even at bedside; for the 
  131. hearing impaired the Morse code may be sent using flashing 
  132. lights or a vibrating surface; for the visually impaired, 
  133. VEs may read or write for the examinee; where warranted, the 
  134. VEs may pause the Morse code message after each 
  135. sentence/phrase, or each word, or even after each character 
  136. to allow the examinee additional time to absorb and 
  137. interpret what was sent--also the VEs may substitute a 
  138. sending test for a receiving test where the examinee's 
  139. handicap warrants.  
  140.  
  141. VE Teams may need advanced notice in order to provide the 
  142. necessary accommodations to examinees who require them.  If 
  143. you will require accommodations, please contact the VE Team in 
  144. advance to advise them of your needs.

  147. EXEMPTION OF THE 13/20 WPM MORSE CODE REQUIREMENTS 
  148.  
  149. If you are a severely handicapped or disabled individual and 
  150. have  already passed at least a 5 WPM Morse code examination 
  151. (or hold a license which meets that requirement), you may be 
  152. eligible for exemption from the 13/20 WPM Morse code 
  153. examination requirements.  For information and applicable 
  154. forms, send a SASE to the ARRL/VEC, 225 Main St, Newington 
  155. CT 06111, and request our Handicapped Information Package.
